While it currently maintains a dominating presence in the industry, changes in consumer preferences, the entry of new fast food chains and their increasingly out-of-date marketing system threatens to send KFC into the decline stage of the Product Life Cycle unless the organisation takes on certain changes that keep KFC up to date with the current market. A humans consciousness has character, and can be broken up into three main faculties. Firstly a human has conscience: the inner voice that tells between right and wrong. Secondly a human has free will, in that humans can override instinct in order to make free choices. In addition, if you have good ethics you will have good business. Business ethics are a moral code that people conducting any sort of business should feel honorably obligated to follow. People are definitely morally responsible to follow a code of ethics and should never cheat each other. A person selling something is morally obligated to inform the purchaser of several things: the value of the car at cost, faithfulness to the client, and be able to answer any questions honestly, without any holdbacks. In The Grapes of Wrath, it is obvious that the car dealer was not ethical at all. For example, they used to coerce women into liking specific cars, so the husband would have to feel forced to buy the car to impress their girlfriends/wives. Another example is how the car dealer used to put lousy parts into the cars and sell them, knowing that the car would break down 5 miles down the road. He took advantage of the peoples necessity to get out of Oklahoma for his own personal gain. Also, the buyer has a certain responsibility too. They need to make sure to not completely trust the seller, because not everyone is ethical. They should examine the goods carefully, ask educated questions, and read up on the topic before going ahead and buying something. For example, in The Grapes of Wrath, the car dealer was able to take more advantage of the people because he can see the raw need on their faces, and how they didnt really ask anything to make him give them a better deal. In America there is a phenomenon where some people benefit from the color of their skin, while others are persecuted for the same reason. The White establishment thrust Blacks and other minorities into an ââ¬Å"otherâ⬠category, and punishes them for their differences. This system gives White people many advantages over other groups. This racial advantage has been labeled ââ¬Å"White privilege, and allows Whites to be complacent about racial issues because instead of be hurt they actually benefit from their race. Their blindness to the problems of American culture like this, prevent them from seeing the ââ¬Å"disturbing, disappointing and upsettingâ⬠aspects of Black life. Whites are highly unaware of the ââ¬Å"authentic African-American experienceâ⬠because they choose to remain ignorant (Kajtar). In this way the also choose to benefit from their inequalities that they have implemented into the American system. Blacks are prevented from enjoying life in the American work force because of their race. The problem is that Whites cause Black misery, but do nothing to change this. Term A2/Spring, 2006 March 25, 2006 Case Summary: In 1986 a Cleveland manufacture bought Technological Products and subsequently sold the electronics division to separate investors that manufactured computer chips and printed circuit boards. One of the investors renamed their company Acme Electronics and the other investor renamed their company Omega Electronics, Inc. The Acme company retained its original management team and promoted the general manager to president. The Omega company hired a new president and upgraded several of its existing personnel. Both companies are located in the same geographical area and compete for the same contracts. Acme employs 550 people, whereas the Omega employs 480 people. In the 1990s, production of complex circuit boards by Acme and Omega was threatened by mixed analog and digital devices. Both companies realized the pending threat and started to aggressively seek new customers. In July of 1992, a major photocopier manufacturer was looking for subcontractors to assemble digital memory units for a new experimental copier. The project contract was estimated between $7 million to $9 million in sales. Both Acme and Omega submitted competitive bids for the production of units and both companies were selected to produce 100 units. The photocopier manufacturer explained to both companies that production speed was a critical element of the contract and that each company would only have about two weeks to produce the prototypes or risk delaying the final copier production. On July 13, 1992 the Acme company started ordering the necessary the parts and began production on the memory units. Each department worked separately and encountered problems that led to delays in the production cycle. Two days prior to the delivery date the photocopier manufacturer informed Acme that the rival company Omega had discovered a design flaw in the connector cable and that he would be sending over a new blueprint to re-work the memory units. According to the photocopier manufacture, Acme would still be held to the delivery date. On July 10, 1992, Omega started having meetings to get production underway. Within days the Drafting department prepared blueprints, while the engineering and production departments work together to begin methods design. However, on July 20 Omega discovered a design flaw in the connector cable. The engineering department redesigned the cable and the drafting department finalized the changes in the manufacturing prints. The additional delays in reassembly of the units at Acme caused them to deliver the 100 units late. However, Omega completed a full quality inspection of all 100 units and delivered the final units on time. The photocopier manufacturer split the contract between Acme and Omega and included additional provisions stipulating zero defects and reduced final cost. Ultimately, the Acme reduce it overall cost by 20 percent and won the total contract. Summary Recommendation: The Omega company should consider redesigning its organizational structure to become more functional in design in order to take advantage of economies of scale; in-depth skill knowledge and overall efficiency. The company should implement organization charts with clearly define job duties and responsibilities so employees fully understand their role in the organization. Also, the management team should used formal written communication to covey project expectations and a sense of urgency to complete the assignment within the allotted time frame. Case Analysis: The Acme Company appears to be designed around being efficient and task oriented in order to be a high volume manufacturer. The company has detailed organizational charts and job descriptions which define clear responsibilities. Management believes in providing written communication to achieving the task at hand. In fact, as soon as the company received the blueprints management immediately sent out written communication to all department heads and executives indicating the critical constraints and the expectations of performing efficiently. Based on the organizational structure, each department worked independently and at different speeds. Mr. Tyler, President was developing a relationship with the photocopier manufacturer by keeping in telephone contact and trying to learn of new developments. The Acme strategy has traditionally been to keep the client happy. In a time of crisis, Mr. Tyler was able to give direct orders and instruct certain departments to reconfigure the components as needed. At the same time critical decisions were made to skip normal quality control processes to stay on course. Ultimately, the company generated 90 quality made units with 10 being defective. On the other hand, the Omega Company appears to be designed around the team work approach to achieve production goals. The company does not have organizational charts and management believes that all employees should be familiar with various activities throughout the organization. Also, management does not allow written memos to the staff employees. Once the company received the blueprints management began having meetings to discuss the production method instead of dividing up the specific work assignments to achieve. The engineering and production departments pooled resources to work on the methods design. On the positive side, most of the problems identified within Omegaââ¬â¢s production cycle were resolved quickly and overcome by the team effort approach. In the time of crisis and rapid changes needed to produce a quality product the company was able to effectively work as a team. Ultimately, the company delivered a high quality product with no defects and within the required time frame. Alternative Identified: Since, Omega is relatively small with only a few product lines the first alterative would be for the company to be more formal in its organizational design and structure, which includes organizational charts and well defined job responsibilities in order to become more efficient and reduce cost. Plot Summary Pride and Prejudice opens with the Bennet familys reaction to a bit of social news: the nearby Netherfield house has been leased to Mr. Bingley, a wealthy and single young man. Mrs. Bennet expresses the belief that Bingley will fall in love with one of her daughters. Her prediction proves true at the neighborhood ball, where Bingley and the sweet eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, fall in love at first sight. At the same ball, the strong-willed second daughter Elizabeth Bennet finds herself the object of disdain from Bingleyââ¬â¢s arrogant, antisocial friend Darcy. Caroline Bingley and Mr. Darcy convince Mr. Bingley of Janeââ¬â¢s disinterest and separate the couple. Elizabethââ¬â¢s distaste for Darcy only grows when she befriends Wickham, a young militiaman who claims that Darcy ruined his livelihood out of spite. Darcy expresses interest in Elizabeth, but Elizabeth harshly rejects Darcyââ¬â¢s self-absorbed proposal of marriage. The truth soon unravels. It is revealed that Wickham spent all the money Darcyââ¬â¢s father left him and then tried to seduce Darcyââ¬â¢s younger sister. During a trip with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth visits Darcyââ¬â¢s estate, Pemberley, where she begins to view Darcy in a better light. Her positive impression of Darcy grows when she learns that he has secretly used his own money to convince Wickham to marry, rather than abandon, her sister Lydia Bennet. Darcys aunt, Lady Catherine, demands that Darcy marry her daughter, but her plan backfires and instead leads to Darcy and Elizabeth finding their romantic happiness alongside a reunited Jane and Bingley. Major Characters Elizabeth Bennet. The second of the five Bennet daughters, Elizabeth (ââ¬Å"Lizzyâ⬠) is the storyââ¬â¢s protagonist. Playful and intelligent, she prizes her ability to make judgments quickly. Her journey of self-discovery is at the heart of the story, as she learns how to discern the truth beneath first impressions. Fitzwilliam Darcy. Mr. Darcy is a haughty and wealthy landowner who snubs Elizabeth when they first meet. He is proud of his social status and is frustrated with his own attraction to Elizabeth but, like her, he learns to overcome his previous judgments to come to a truer perspective. Jane Bennet. The sweet, pretty eldest Bennet daughter. She falls in love with Charles Bingley, Her kind, nonjudgmental nature leads her to overlook Caroline Bingleyââ¬â¢s malice until it is almost too late. Charles Bingley. Polite, open-hearted, and a little naà ¯ve, Bingley is a close friend of Darcy. He is easily influenced by Darcyââ¬â¢s opinions. He falls in love with Jane but is persuaded away from her, although he learns the truth in time to make amends. George Wickham. An outwardly charming soldier, Wickhamââ¬â¢s pleasant demeanor hides a selfish, manipulative core. Though he presents himself as a victim of Darcyââ¬â¢s pride, he is revealed to be the problem himself. He continues his bad behavior by seducing young Lydia Bennet. Major Themes Love and Marriage. The novel focuses on the obstacles to, and the reasons for, romantic love. Most notably, it satirizes expectations about marriages of convenience and suggests that genuine compatibility and attractionââ¬âas well as honesty and respectââ¬âare the foundations of the best matches. Characters who try to subvert this thesis are the targets of the bookââ¬â¢s biting satire. Pride. In the novel, uncontrolled pride is one of the biggest obstacles to the charactersââ¬â¢ happiness. In particular, pride based on notions of class and status is framed as ridiculous and unfounded in real values. Prejudice. Making judgments about others can be useful, but not when those judgments are formed erroneously or quickly. The novel posits that overly confident prejudice must be overcome and tempered before the characters can reach happiness. Social Status. Austen famously satirizes the manners and obsessions of class distinctions. While none of the characters are socially mobile in the modern sense, obsessions with status are presented as foolish and arrogant. Wealth and inheritance do matter, though, as evidenced by Mr. Collinsââ¬â¢ presence as Mr. Bennetââ¬â¢s heir. Literary Style Austenââ¬â¢s writing is famous for one particular literary device: free indirect discourse. Free indirect discourse is the technique of writing thoughts that seem to come from an individual characters mind, without shifting into first-person narration or using action tags such as she thought. This device gives readers access to inner thoughts and helps to solidify the charactersââ¬â¢ unique voices. The novel was written in the Romantic period of literature, which was at its peak in the first half of the 19th century. The movement, which was a reaction against the onslaught of industrialism and rationalism, emphasized individuals and their emotions. Austenââ¬â¢s work fits into this framework to a degree, as it emphasizes decidedly non-industrial contexts and focuses primarily on the emotional lives of richly drawn individual characters. About the Author Born in 1775, Jane Austen is best known for her sharp observations of a small social circle: country gentry, with a few lower-tier military families in the mix. Her work prized the inner lives of women, featuring complicated characters who were flawed yet likable and whose internal conflicts were as important as their romantic entanglements. He doesnââ¬â¢t know how to socialise as he has never experienced life through the point of view of another human being. His total upbringing by his father was completely orchestrated mentally and physically. Frank epitomises the extremes of societyââ¬â¢s norms at the time that ââ¬Å"The Wasp Factoryâ⬠was written when Margaret Thatcher was in power. Thatcherââ¬â¢s belief when she was in power was that itââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Every man for himselfâ⬠which created social isolation between different families, as can be seen in the families of both ââ¬Å"The Wasp Factoryâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠. Frankââ¬â¢s family sounds highly dysfunctional when we discover how he talks of how Ericââ¬â¢s mother haemorrhaged and bled to death when Eric was born. His opinion of how Eric was the first murderer of the family is very sinister and thought provoking, ââ¬Å"Old Eric beat me to it, killing his mum before he had even drawn breathâ⬠. Frank doesnââ¬â¢t even exist in society which is one of the reasons why he has no education because he could never go to school. The same can be said of the characters in ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠who are illiterate and uneducated which can be shown through their vocabulary. No signs of education can be seen in any of the characters due to their personalities and lifestyles. Also the accent that comes through the vocabulary makes the characters seem different, as in our society we are not use to hearing their accents and generally their lifestyles seem isolated from society. We never hear of how they survive, where their income comes from nor even simple daily routines such as house hold duties. Even though the characters speech in ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠is altered, it brings the reader closer to the characters and they seem more human, which is why we understand the characters more personally and understand their different lifestyles. Social isolation is another aspect that affects the characters in ââ¬Å"The Wasp Factoryâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠. In ââ¬Å"The Wasp Factoryâ⬠, Frank understands how his island is just a miniscule part of the planet and knows that he limits his own knowledge of first hand experiences of other places, but the reason why his life is surrounded and clouded by the fact that he will never leave the island is deeper. He believes he has been treated cruelly by society and believes that it is influential and contaminating. This is largely due to the fact that when Eric left the island, he was exposed to the social pressures. He says, ââ¬Å"Eric chose a path and followed it ââ¬â that path led to the destruction of most of what he wasâ⬠. Frank believes that Eric developing a mental illness as we learn in ââ¬Å"What Happened to Ericâ⬠and his personality change is a result of his leaving the island and returning with a changed heart, indicating the world is a cruel and life-changing place. Frank sees his island as a haven, his protection from the cruelty and dangers of the outside world. He even says, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t bother people, and they best not bother meâ⬠, which shows he created isolation purposely, and that he isnââ¬â¢t a shy or unsociable person. In ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠the setting reflects the characters isolation from society. ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠is set on a completely bare stage, which helps to create its detachment. At the time that ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠was written, the economy in Britain was in decline and unemployment rose, and this is reflected in the play. The society that the play is set was very capitalistic. Capitalism is a social system based on the principle of individual right, and is reflected in the play as the social class the characters are in is segregated. Bond is also trying to address a political issue with this play, Violence will only stop when we live in a just society in which all people are equal in all significant respects. Capitalism canââ¬â¢t do this because its political ethos is competitiveness. The stoning of the baby is a consequence of this, but the eruption of violence has nothing to do with the preceding action or with the object of violence, the baby. Itââ¬â¢s just the result of the general situation (being bored, having no aims in life) and some of their cries while they murder the baby are ruling-class slogans. Aggression is not directed against the source of alienation, but against human nature, in this case the baby as the epitome of neediness and hope for the future. The young people express that they are not interested in children. Both books have similarities and differences in the way women are portrayed. The Wasp Factoryâ⬠, Frank is brought up entirely by his father, and the effect this has on Franks view of women is very negative ââ¬â he says, ââ¬Å"My greatest enemies are women and the sea ââ¬â women because they are weak and live in the shadow of menâ⬠(Pg 43). Frank also has a view that women like to see men helpless as he says ââ¬Å"I expected she would just let me crack my skull on the pavement because women like to see men helplessâ⬠(Pg 79). Frankââ¬â¢s mother also left the family when he was very young, which may be another reason why he resents the existence of women. In ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠the women are portrayed as weak and insecure. Pam is a very fragile character, and is easily hurt or made happy. Her emotions swing from one extreme to the other, in scene ten, she talks to Len about him seeing other women, ââ¬Å"Yer ainââ¬â¢ a bad sortâ⬠, and the next minute she is screaming at him, ââ¬Å"Yerââ¬â¢re a stubborn sod! â⬠(Pg 95). Pamââ¬â¢s relationship with Fred is definitely one way, at the beginning of scene 6 we see Pam practically begging Fred to come home that night, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t care if yer bin with yer girls, come ââ¬Ëome afterâ⬠(Pg 59), and Fred basically doesnââ¬â¢t really care and just says, ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s plenty a blokes knockinââ¬â¢ about, why donââ¬â¢t yer pick on someone else? Even after the murder of her baby, Pam puts her relationship with Fred above the fact that he contributed towards the babyââ¬â¢s murder, which is a reflection on how much she really cared for her child. In ââ¬Å"Savedâ⬠there is not one strong relationship based on trust. The only relationship which can be examined is between Harry and Mary, but even this has its flaws. Harry says that he only lives with Mary as she does the ââ¬Å"washinââ¬â¢ an cookinâ⬠(Pg 116), and he has no trust towards her as he thinks that if he left, Mary would easily find a replacement, ââ¬Å"she would soon ââ¬Ëave someone in my bedâ⬠(Pg 119) One thing that is common in the main characters of both books is the lack of hope and aspiration. It is hard to visualise how the characters would develop as time goes by as they all seem to be in a daily routine which limits their awareness beyond their own surroundings and excludes them from their community. We might believe that for Len to go further in life and to make something of himself he would have to break free of his current situation but he continues to believe that things will eventually work out for himself and for Pam. Bond says that the play is ââ¬Å"irresponsibly optimisticâ⬠. This is true as the ending might be a new beginning for both Len and Pam (Possibly because Pam now has her Radio Times back). In ââ¬Å"The Wasp Factoryâ⬠Frank is optimistic about many things. Firstly he has a sense of optimism that has been enforced by his father. Frank is also optimistic about Eric coming home as he has a very strong link with him, even though he is certified insane. It is set in Oceania, one of the three countries in the world. This town is made up of three types of people ââ¬â people in the Inner Party (upper class), people of the Outer Party (the middle-lower class) and the proles which is taken from proletarian, who are seen as ââ¬Ësub-humanââ¬â¢. They are constantly being watched by a man only known as Big Brother who monitors them through telescreens which is constantly displaying propaganda for the party against Goldstein. Winston is a member of the Outer Party and his job is to rewrite history so that it makes the world appear to be getting better with the Party always being right. Winston hates the Party and Big Brother and believes that man named Oââ¬â¢Brien will help him who actually works for the party and finally tortures Winston until he is broken and has to forfeit his love for Julia. Everything in Winstonââ¬â¢s world has to conform to what the Big Brother approves to be right, nothing can be out of line, and it has to abide to all the regulations that are made. The Doctor tries to explain to Lincoln that he has made a choice in staying at the facility, to make sure it continues to operate and to help repopulate the world once theyââ¬â¢re able to repopulate the world. This implies that there will be no more strict rules, no more conformity, no more of having to wear the same clothes as everyone else and that everyone will have their own freedom. Uniformity is evident in all three texts as it shows us the strict control and conformity between the created societies and how it has to be perfect. But in this, we realise that there are many dystopian ways that come from a created utopian society. Secondly, the ââ¬Å"God figureâ⬠enforcing an illusion is evident in both 1984 and The Island, in how both societies are made to look towards one personal figure who is in control of everything. In 1984, the people living in London are looked after by a ââ¬Å"Big Brotherâ⬠who has the surveillance over the whole city what everyone does, what everyone says and how everyone acts. He has a group of devoted Thought Police who are out to spy on all the subversive behavior of all the residentââ¬â¢s living in the city. All around the city, posters displayed ââ¬Å"Big Brother is watching youâ⬠(slide 5)(slide 7) and all the slogans that say ââ¬Å"War is peace, Freedom is slavery and Ignorance is Strengthâ⬠. These are the official slogans of the Party which are inscribed in massive letters on the Ministry of Truth. Because these are introduced early in the novel, this allows the reader to be introduced to the idea of doublethink. By weakening the independence and strength of an individualââ¬â¢s mind, it forces then to live in constant state of propaganda and the induced fear. This allows for the concept of surveillance, the loss of private space and the loss for individuality with telescreens that scrutinise your every move, constantly pumping propaganda into your mind. All this was broken when the roundness of the glass paperweight was crushed by the Thought Police crashing in. ââ¬Å"The fragment of coralâ⬠¦ rolled across the matâ⬠shows the shattered paperweight which Winston dreamed of sharing his love Julia (slide 6). After this incident, Winston and Julian are separated to profess their love for Big Brother and the Party. The Island is a movie set in 2019, in a post-modern world after an atomic world ââ¬Å"contaminationâ⬠, where they are now trying to establish a new colonisation in a place where the contamination didnââ¬â¢t hit, The Island. The clones live in an underground facility in Arizona where they are being watched by Doctor Merrick and his crew, who are dressed in black clothing. Both these texts share the main theme of a ââ¬Å"God figureâ⬠who is meant to look after everyone under their care. In The Island, Lincoln Six Echo is the first clone in the facility to ever raise questions about his existence and wanting answers to all of them. One day, after having the same nightmare, he is asked to see Doctor Merrick, the head of the Merrick Institute and the one who is the ââ¬Å"Godâ⬠of the facility, who asks Lincoln to ââ¬Å"tell me about your dreamâ⬠(slide 7), but Lincolnââ¬â¢s reply ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s always the same dreamâ⬠¦ I drownâ⬠. At this point, the camera is switching between the two characters but as Lincoln begins to explain the real questions, it starts to focus on him more and bring a close up shot of him. This is where the director wants us to focus, on what Lincoln has to say right now with all the issues that seem to be happening to him and his way of expressing what he knows. This notifies Merrick that Echo is not only just a vegetable clone, which he claims them to be when he explains to his clients, but one who has feelings and senses of a real human. It is an illusion to the Garden of Eden where it is has implications of Utopia. This is seen by the light and dark side of the table with Lincoln sitting in the light with his white clothing and Merrick in the dark, in his black suit. But when Lincoln and Jordan escape from the facility, the only way possible of knowing whether there was actually ever a contamination is when Lincoln smashes the illusion. He throws a glass bottle against the stone and exclaims that ââ¬Å"there was no contamination, it was a lieâ⬠(slide 6). This breaks all the things that Lincoln and Jordan have told and taught at the Merrick facility. This is a point in time where Lincolnââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Renovatioâ⬠or rebirth to the reality (slide 8). The shattering of the glass, in this case, breaks all the rules of there ever being a contamination. At this point, they both realise that they were caught within a world of lies which they have finally been able to get out of. As you can see, in both these texts, there is a demiurge looking after everyone who is trying to brainwash them ith information so that they cannot question their existence. But in both texts, this is broken by the shattering of an illusion which defeats the demiurgeââ¬â¢s role of brainwashing them which makes the character realise they were led astray from the real purpose of what their real existence was actually for. Ultimately, all threes texts were written for a purpose during its time. It gives us a better insight of what a utopian world would look like and how we could better aspire for hope. Thomas More wrote Utopia as a need for a better world that was influenced by tyrannic England. 984, written by George Orwell, warns us of the type of government that couldââ¬â¢ve ruled if things werenââ¬â¢t changed. The movie The Island, directed by Michael Bay was meant to warn us about the future of human society and how individuals will lose their own expression and have to conform to society. These were all warnings that could have lead to destruction and have individualism oppressed which wouldââ¬â¢ve stopped human relationships.
